Miles Chapel C. M. E. Church had its beginning with a Sunday School class being taught in the kitchen of Mr. Green Hogg and his wife Ella, who resided at 1928 North Palace Avenue.
During a Quarterly Conference in 1908, at the Universe C. M. E. Church, Bishop Phillips, with Reverend J. W. Lewis serving as Presiding Elder, chose Reverend A. M. D. Langrurn (at that time an instructor at Texas College) to organize and construct an edifice to be known in the Tyler District as Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
During the construction of Miles Chapel, members of the Universe C. M.E. Church diligently offered their support and services by bringing food to the builders. Many of the families of the Universe C. M. E. Church became charter members of Miles Chapel when it was completed in 1909.
In 1918 the church was destroyed by a storm. It was rebuilt in the nineteen twenties. The church and the parsonage were later remodeled. The first brick edifice was constructed in 1947. The educational building, known as the R. R. Johnson Fellowship Hall was erected in 1963. In 1968-69 a Day Care Center (now closed) was established. In 1970, the interior of the entire church was redecorated, and the lot adjacent to the south side of the church was purchased for parking. Miles Chapel was incorporated in 1974.
Since that period, continuous improvements have been made to the structure and more parking spaces have been obtained with the purchase of a lot on Palace Street across from the Church. With the closure of the Day Care Center, the Fellowship Hall was renovated during the 2005-2006 conference year.
The pastor and members of Miles Chapel are continuously working to improve the edifice and expand its ministries by the giving of gifts, time, and service. As members we are extremely proud of our church and its leaders, and as a family it is our aim to continue to lend ourselves to the community, through many avenues of services that we offer.
